How do you play? Really, stop and think about it for a minute.
Are you the classic lead player? Do you show up to a gig with
your handy bag of recycled pentatonic licks and predialed
Marshall tone (regardless of gig), ready to shred (regardless of
genre)?
On the other side of the spectrum, maybe you're the underprepared
guitarist. The guy who's so unprepared for the gig that he spends
half the time back at his amp changing settings, and the other
half staring down at his pedals wondering whether he's in tune.
Maybe (hopefully) you're somewhere in the middle?
My idea of the "best" guitarist is objectively subjective. The
biggest and most important trait is the ability to listen and
play REACTIVELY. If you show up to the gig overconfident and
ignore your band, you won't fit, regardless of how good you think
you are. Also, if you show up underprepared and panicky you won't
play reactively because you're too worried about how you sound.
There is a middle ground, and I'm going to tell you WHY I think
it's a big deal.
