Improvising is hard to get the hang of. If it wasn't, most of
what I talk about in these videos would be totally useless
information. Improvising is often the number one thing guitarists
want to learn, and one of the trickiest to master.
Ultimately, it comes down to having what you want to play already
in your head, and THEN moving on to translate it on the
fretboard-- and that whole process takes time to develop. The
first part of that process is all about creativity, and that
isn't something I can give you, but it is something you can train
and develop!
One trick that can help boost your creativity and lead to new
ideas is starting with rhythm. Really, rhythm is something that
almost anyone can feel (except maybe those off-rhythm clappers at
churches and concerts... seriously, how do they do that?!).
Because it's so inherent to most people, it should be the place
that you start and focus on when writing or improvising. Even
simple melodic ideas can transform into awesome, memorable pieces
when you take the time to develop the rhythm. Let's look at ways
to do this in today's video!
