There's an art to playing rhythm guitar. A lot of art(s),
actually...
It's definitely less glamorous than playing lead, but in some
ways, it might be more rewarding. If you really listen closely to
songs, good lead lines and solos can make a song recognizable,
but well-written progressions and chord structures make songs
that last and that are really *different*.
One of the challenges of playing rhythm is getting away from
simple first position chords and unwieldy barre chords. There is
a way to marry the knowledge of the fretboard that we have as
lead players with the solid backbone and shaping ability of
rhythm playing. We can create chords out of our most used scales!
