I keep getting lots of questions about blues and how to improvise
blues solos. I also get a lot of responses saying that you can't
teach blues-- you just feel it. OR that the original BLUES
MASTERS didn't know music theory, and that somehow learning music
theory makes you unable to play blues (?).
I absolutely agree that blues has to be felt, BUT there's also a
lot of complex music theory going into what makes the blues FEEL
the way it does, and for some players, knowing that helps! And
the other perspective has merit too, many of the original players
didn't know any music theory, so it's safe to say that you CAN
play blues without knowing any either!
Today's video is going to look at some distinct techniques you'll
see used in the blues a lot-- 5 of them, to be exact. This is a
recipe I've made for crafting a convincing, savory blues solo!
There's music theory involved, but you definitely don't NEED it,
and it will work for anyone that can play. Let me know what you
think.
