So in yesterday's email, I told you that memorizing licks won't
make you better at improvising. They are good at making you sound
like a great guitarist, but if we're really being honest-- they
just teach you to mimic really well. And that has it's uses...
but not when it comes to playing like yourself!
Next time you learn a lick, try this:
1. Listen to the lick; mentally analyze it.
Draw a mental picture of it. Ascending notes? Draw an ascending
line. Going down? Draw descending stairs.
The mental process is important.
Next, try to figure out the lick by ear. NO TABS! I'll know if
you cheat! This will lead you to discover subtle (but profound
things) in the way the lick is played.
That's the 1st step.
The 2nd step is to use that lick as an opening statement. Respond
to it musically.
