Back when I was job-hunting…
I used to think it was really unfair how hiring managers reject people
because of _tiny_ mistakes on their resumes.
But now, having hired people myself, I get it.
Sometimes, you’re sifting through _hundreds_ of applicants…
And you just don’t have time to read them all.
To put it into perspective…
Imagine opening your inbox and finding three _pages_ of unread,
promotional emails from companies you’ve never heard of.
That’s what employers are dealing with.
And since employers are only human (I know, hard to believe
sometimes!) they’re looking for literally ANY excuse to use their
favorite 6-letter word - DELETE - and move on to the next candidate.
Wrote ‘managing’ when it should’ve been ‘managed’?
Delete.
Used a funky resume format that's hard to figure out?
Delete.
Dates not properly formatted?
Delete.
20 candidates with less than a 50% match in the ATS for the job
description keywords?
Select All, Delete.
And even once the original pool’s been whittled down, you’ve got
to remember:
Hiring is risky business.
Tens, if not hundreds of thousands of $$$ hang in the balance. (And
the average cost per hire is ~ $4,700)
Do you really think an employer is going to take a chance on someone
who - in their eyes - didn’t take the time to properly edit their
resume?
No way Jose.
That’s why if you’re going to run the gauntlet of job-hunting…
Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by letting small mistakes creep
into your resume.
Before you send it out, go through it with a fine-tooth comb and make
sure it’s absolutely perfect. Do not give employers an excuse to
press ‘Delete’.
