[img] Is my Acer notebook dying of old age at the ripe age of just 2 years
old? My problem started this weekend after my son clicked on an ad or downloaded a program
that may have been infected. Since then, our notebook crashes daily, seems much slower,
and Windows 10 takes much longer to boot up. Then, today I got a pop-up window with a
suspicious warning, which I didn't click on. Do you have any thoughts of what could be
causing this problem? And what's the best way to fix it?
 – Ellen D., New York, NY

Windows crashes and slowness can be caused by several factors, including what you've
described. You can reinstall Windows 10, but that can be a serious challenge. Instead,

Recently I was asked to send someone a screenshot of something and I have no idea
how to do it. Can you help me?
 – Brenda M., Austin, TX

Snapping a picture of your screen is very simple. Simply press the PRTSCN key on your
keyboard. This key is often located either next to the BACKSPACE key or in your top row of
keys next to the function keys. Once you have pressed the PRTSCN button, open a document
and click PASTE to paste that image into the document. Many users open Microsoft Paint.
This method gives you an image of the entire screen. For more functionality, Click Start,
type SNIP into the search field and then click the Snipping Tool when it appears. This
feature gives you control over the size and shape of the screenshot you take. If you then
need to send someone that screenshot, simply save the document and attach it to an email.
Alternatively, you can also simply compose a new email message and Paste the image
directly into the email.

What is the difference between a computer with an integrated graphics processor and
one with a dedicated graphics processor?
 – James W., Dayton, OH

Computers with integrated graphics will either have a chip built into the motherboard or
capabilities built into the processor that performs the task of displaying video onto your
monitor. The integrated graphics share resources with your computer’s memory, which can
degrade the computers video performance. A dedicated graphics card is an add-on card whose
sole job is to handle video processing tasks. If you are someone who plays video games or
plan on editing home movies on the PC, it would be wise to have a dedicated video card.
One of the key graphics processor specifications is the amount of video memory the card
offers. The more memory the card offers, the faster the computer will be able to play
games and the greater support it will offer for HD video. To let you easily connect your
PC to an HDTV, many new computers offer an HDMI output to let you use a single cable for
audio and video.

Driver Tip: Prevent a Driver or Update From Being Installed from Windows Update

Sometimes a Windows driver from Windows Update doesn’t work right, and you want to roll
back to the previous driver. The problem with that is that Windows will just go ahead and
install that update again later. So what can we do?

Just uninstalling drivers or updates won’t prevent them from being installed again.
There’s no way to “hide” an update or block updates from within Windows itself, but
Microsoft provides a downloadable tool to do this. It’s intended for temporarily hiding
buggy or otherwise problematic updates while they don’t work properly on your system.

Download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter for Windows 10 from
Microsoft, which you can download here,
http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab
.

When you run this troubleshooter, it will search for available updates and allow you to
“hide” them, preventing Windows from automatically installing them. In the future, you
can run this troubleshooter again and unhide the updates when you want to install them.

   PC Performance Tip: Corrupted Registry

There are a few symptoms that your system which tells you that you have a corrupted
registry. Certain computers show several of these symptoms while others only some. The
degree in which your computer displays these symptoms is dependent on how bad the
corrupted windows registry may be.

Symptoms:

1. Slow Running Windows Applications – This is one of the most widely reported symptoms
of a corrupt registry. Opening documents and switching between programs takes longer and
longer to accomplish, leading to massive frustration.

2. Computer Screen Freezes – A very common error. Most screen freezes happen when you
switch between programs or try to exit a program.

3. Random Error Messages – This is the scariest problem because the messages are very
hard to diagnose. An example would be the ever popular “Blue Screen of Death” memory
dump error screen.

4. Slow PC Shutdown and/or Startups – Extremely slow loading and shutdowns. More than 5
minutes.

BIOS Tip – Securing Your BIOS

Many people do not know it, but your computers BIOS can become infected with malware. The
most famous was the Chernobyl virus back in the 90’s. These days, there is less of a
chance of this happening, but it is much better to be safe than sorry. There is a way to
make sure your BIOS is secure and to protect it from any potential malware infections.

The first step in your safety plan is to protect your BIOS with an administrator password
that must be entered before a BIOS update can occur. Boot or reboot your PC. While it’s
starting up, repeatedly tap the ‘DEL,’ ‘F1,’ or whatever other special key is
required to launch the BIOS. This information is typically displayed onscreen during the
boot process, although it might not be immediately obvious. This text, for instance,
appears verbatim at the bottom of the screen for just a few moments after we start our
computer.

Once your BIOS setup menu is loaded, look for the menu item that enables you to set up a
password. There might be more than one. It may be listed as SET SUPERVISOR PASSWORD or
SECURITY OPTIONS.

Select the menu item for creating the password and enter a password (usually twice, to
verify what you typed the first time). If you think you might have trouble remembering the
password later, as you’ll access your BIOS infrequently, make sure you write it down
somewhere.

Save your BIOS changes and your computer will reboot. From here on out you’ll need to
enter this password before any changes can be made to your BIOS, ensuring malware will
have a harder time harming your PC.
